Painful Knots, Very Painful. What Can Be Done?

i have had knots, very painful knots a few times and im told its staph. i have one right now but its not as puffy and does not have squishy, soft spots. it seems like this hurts worse than before, which i didn t think possible. i have been told to watch for red streaks as it could be caused by blood infection and very dangerous. one side of this seems to streak, but i am not positive. i have read warning signs, and what to watch for and this does not seem to fit, but 1) should i go to the e.r. to be sure? and 2) if its not a blood infection, is it ok to wait a few more days and then lance it myself? i tend to hurt myself a lot less than the e.r. staff has in the past...thank you

Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Staphylococcus bacteria causes localized infection called as abscess which is swelling under the skin filled with pus and blood. The abscess after 2-3 days becomes soft in one part and breaks open to ooze out pus and blood. This is called pointing of abscess. This softening can be hastened by hot fomentation which also relieves the pain. Please do not try anything at home. I suggest you go to the ER for procedure of incision and drainage of the abscess. Also get a prescription for antibiotics and pain killers to fasten the healing process and prevent recurrence of abscess. Thanks.
