Painless Soft Lump On Scrotum. Is It A Matter Of Concern?

I noticed that I have a lump on my scrotum. There is no tenderness, it is basically painless, except that I do have some pain around the area above my genitals. This lump appeared very suddenly, and I don't recall ever noticing it before. The lump itself is fairly soft, and does not appear to be connected to my testicle, although it appears to be close.
My parents are going to take me to the doctor tomorrow to have it checked out, but I would like to know if this is likely anything serious. How concerned should I be?
