Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Perianal Abscess Procedure Done. Chances Of Fistula?
I just last night got a procedure done to drain my perianal abscess that I was diagnosed with about 5 days after I think it formed. I change the dressing about 3 times a day (rolled up piece of gauze on top of butt crack and a full piece of gauze over top of the rolled piece with tape to keep it covered) and I only feel minimal pain (slight pain around area mostly when i sit on the area) and I am very very nervous that I will get a fistula. 1. Is it likely that I get one? 2. What other things can I do to prevent it? 3. I have a follow up tomorrow, will the surgeon be able to tell if I'll develop a fistula or not (during tomorrow's appointment)?
I understand your concerns. If you have been taking antibiotics as prescribed by your doctor and maintaining the hygiene in the perineal area the likelihood of your drained abscess turning into a fistula is almost nil. If you continue to keep the area clean and dry and continue to be on antibiotics I do not think there is any reason for being apprehensive about any possible fistula formation. The surgeon can definitely examine you to see if you have a fistula by inspecting the area, however the likelihood of there being a fistula is very low to nil. I hope this helps relieve your anxiety and hope you start to have a positive perspective to the whole issue.
Take care and have a lovely day!
