Pregnant. Bleeding, Passing Clots, Low Placenta. Is It A Critical Issue?

Hi, My wife is in 23rd week of pregnancy. Since last Wednesday night, she has been bleeding and passing clots. She was rushed to emergency and the doctors put her under observation. The baby is doing fine. My wife seems to have a lower placenta . The clotting stopped Friday, and the bleeding stopped Saturday. She would see some blood when she d wipe after using the bathroom. The bleeding stopped completely Sunday and we came home Monday. Today morning (Tuesday), she again started to bleed and pass clots. The Drs. have told her to take rest and said that they can only do is to monitor the situation. Anything that we should be concerned about now? Please advice.

Hello

Welcome

If it is grade three placenta praevia then you should be more careful. It needs C section at the maturity of fetus.

In grade one normal delivery can be conducted.

Till then strict bed rest is required. Hospital observation is must.

Blood donor should be kept ready in case of requirement.

Rest leave up to doctor's.

They will do their best.

Best wishes

Hi, your wife is having placenta previa ( low placenta).
Placenta previa is a complication of pregnancy in which the placenta grows in the lowest part of the womb (uterus) and covers all or part of the opening to the cervix( mouth of the uterus). The main symptom of placenta previa is sudden bleeding from the vagina. The bleeding often starts near the end of the second trimester or beginning of the third trimester.Bleeding may be severe. It may stop on its own but can start again days or weeks later.Treatment depends on the amount of bleeding, whether the baby is developed enough to survive if delivered, how much of the cervix is covered and whether you are in labor.
Yes, your doctor is right. What she needs is intense monitoring for both baby and her. Since she is only 23wks, it would be a prolonged treatment until delivery. Just take precautions as advised by your doctor and frequent follow ups and scans for fetal growth is required. Women with placenta previa face similar problem, but many continue till term and have a healthy baby. Anytime bleeding is more than just spotting, she requires hospitalization for monitoring. If bleeding is intense then consideration of delivery has to taken in the interest of mother.
Definitely your wife needs lot of family support for over coming the stressful situation.
