Pregnant. Spontaneous Abortions. Diagnosed With Multinodular Goiter. Taking Thyronorm. Continue After Birth Delivery?

Hi this is Jyothi, age 29 yrs, with a history of spontaneous abortion at 6 weeks in the year 2010, later diagnosed with Toxic multinodular goiter (very fluctuant) and on treatment with PTU- 50mg, for few weeks. Was pregnant and my doc advised PTU 50mg (2 tablets in the morning and thyronorm - 100mg) and again PTU 50mg alone (2 tablets in the night). Was informed this is Block Replacement therapy. Mainting the free T4 levels. Am Currently 23rd week, i.e 6 th month. During my 13th week of pregnancy i had observed spotting for few in and then subsided, was advised bed rest for few weeks. My Ultrasound and TIFFA scan is normal. Am a working woman, but my doctor says to take adequate rest, which is difficult right now as my company only gives 3 months of maternity leave for the delivery. So is it really needed to take rest, i.e apply my maternity leave during 7 th month onwards, as my scan reports say every thing is normal. I do have fears bcoz of my past history of miscarriage. Also for how long should i continue this thyroid medication, i.e should i still continue them even during my 7, 8, 9th months of pregnancy and immediately after delivery? Right now my free T4 levels are in normal, but since it is always fluctuant my doctor is trying to maintain my levels within normal by either changing my dose(same PTU and Thyronorm). Please help.

Hi Jyothi! Thank you for your question and welcome to our site!

Congratulations! I do hope that your pregnancy goes well into term this time without any problems.

Yes, it would be important to continue your medications especially if your thyroid levels are fluctuating. Normal thyroid levels are not only important to your own physiological needs but also for the baby's development. So it is necessary for you to continue monitoring your blood levels to make sure that your current dosage is adequate.

Do try to rest when you can and to minimize stress levels. Eat a healthy and balanced diet and continue your prenatal visits.

If you have further queries, do not hesitate to ask me. Take care!
