Pregnant. Working With Chemicals And Hazardous Substances. Will This Harm The Baby?
Hi I've recently discovered I'm pregnant, I think I'm 6-7 weeks I'm planing on seeing a doctor within the next few weeks, but wasn't in a hurry as I've read they don't really do much until your 8 weeks. I'm currently working at an indoor pool, I work with chemicals like chlorine gas, hydro chloric acid, calcium chloride and other hazardous substances. We wear some PPE but a respirator is about the most protection we have, am I harming my baby?
General & Family Physician, Dr. Anuj Dan's Response
Hi,
Its probably best to avoid chemicals as much as possible when you're pregnant. Some of them might contain teratogens, which can lead to defects in your baby.
To learn more about the chemicals you work with, ask your employer for Material Safety Data Sheets. Your employer may need to carry out a risk assessment at your workplace.
I hope this helped, take care and all the best.
