Pregnant, Bleeding, No Pain, Ultrasound Shows Baby Fine. Why Is There Bleeding During Pregnancy?

I am currently 16 weeks pregnant, about 2 weeks ago i had a bleed which was initially quite a bit and red in colour, i went to emergency, they did a ultrasound and the baby was fine with a good heartbeat etc.. the red turned to brown and lasted a week. it went away and now came back, still brown, but very thick and clotty, no pain, just wondering what could be causing it and how long may it last?

hi,
the causes of bleeding in second trimester pregnancy are,
mainly related to placenta,
it could be placenta previa, if that is present your doctors might have told you about that.
the other things are local trauma to geniatal area, presence of cervical polyps, post coital bleeding etc.
as blood supply to the local genital organs increases in pregnancy, mild friction may also lead to spotting.
normally this type of bleeding will subside by itself,
anyhow if this is becoming continuous and excess you better visit doctor once and get examined.
take care.

OBGYN Dr. Mrs Sumeet Baheti's  Response
Hello there,
This type of painless fresh bleeding episodes in second trimester of pregnancy are most likely because of low lying placenta or may be due to cervical insufficiency.
As you have mentioned that you had an ultrasound done after the first bleeding episode, and that the baby was fine. The ultrasound scan must have mentioned regarding the placental location, the cervical length, status of internal os.
you need to take rest, avoid exertion and if it is cervical insufficiency, you may need cervical stitch.
Take care.
