Pregnant, Taken NyQuil. Will That Hurt The Baby?
My wife is 24wks pregnant and so uncomfortable that she is going through days where she can t sleep. As a 4th grade teacher this is exhausting after a few days. A few times over the last month she has taken NyQuil and slept through the night. Is this hurting the baby? Someone told us its not the active drug but more the alcohol. Isn t okay to have some alcohol...just not a lot or every day? Thanks, Jason

Your wife shouldnt be taking Nyquil as its a sedative and also contains alcohol. Sedation of mother can lead to sedation in the baby and should be avoided. Alcohol is strictly contraindicated in pregnancy as it causes structural defects in the baby and growth restriction. I suggest your wife should stop using these.
Slight discomfort in pregnancy is common. If work is getting tiring for her, she should take a leave. Only physical activity acceptable to her should be done.

1. Acetaminophen is a pain reliever and fever reducer.
2.Doxylamine is an antihistamine that reduces the effects of the natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine can produce symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose.
3. Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant. It affects the cough reflex in the brain that triggers coughing.
4. Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant that shrinks blood vessels in the nasal passages. Dilated blood vessels can cause nasal congestion (stuffy nose).
side effects may be- allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
And It is not safe in pregnancy because of ALCOHOL and DEXTROMETHORPHAN which may cause fetal abnormality.
Many cold, flu, cough, fever or pain medications don't contain alcohol, DXM or aspirin, and these are deemed to be safe for pregnant woman. Try to use them.
