Prescribed Antibiotics For Wound In Cervix, Followed By Changed IUD Insertion. Pap Smear Test Normal. Suggest

Hi. I had an IUD inserted five years ago. I was told that a wound was seen on my cervix, and antibiotics were prescribed, which I took. A few days ago, I had the IUD changed, and I was told again that there was wound on my cervix, another round of antibiotics? I'm wondering, is it the same wound (5 years)? What do I do (apart from taking antibiotics). Note: I did a pap smear some weeks ago, and was told the results are ok. Thank you.

Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this wound on your cervix. I very much doubt if it is the same wound that was there 5years ago.

Beside being told that you have this wound, do you have any symptoms like pains during intercourse, spotting after intercourse, any vaginal discharge? These are going to be very helpful at establishing whether you have any infection that could have been discovered only during an incidental vaginal procedure.

If you were my patient, i would want to take a sample and send to the lab for testing and to make sure that i identify the exact cause of this. I will also want to see you after the course of treatment to make sure that the wound has been completely treated. Depending on what the outcomes are, specific plans would be presented to you.

I am happy to hear that you recent pap smear showed no abnormality. However, if this chronic cervix infection, please note that it is a risk factor for cervical cancer and reason why you should address this finding fully.

I will also like you to always try using protection during intercourse to avoid any sexual transmitted infections unless otherwise. Congratulations on taking control of you reproductive life already by using the IUD.

I hope this helps. Talk to your doctor and propose that he gets yo properly tested and should check for proof of cure after treatment. Thanks and wish you well.

Hi,
From history it seems that you might be having Cervical erosion or chronic cervicitis.
This might be due to constant irritation done by thread of IUD.
I think IUD should be removed to stop further irritation.
If wound does not healed with antibiotics, you may require cauterization of the wound.
Keep local hygiene clean and healthy.
Ok and take care.

OBGYN Dr. Timothy Raichle's  Response
Hello, I would be happy to help you with your question.

Even though the pap smear was normal, this "wound" needs to be better visualized (with a procedure called a colposcopy) and biopsied. This is the best way to rule out some pre-cancerous change at the level of the cervix. Do not be lulled into a false sense of wellness just because the pap smear is normal!

I hope that this helps and good luck!

OBGYN Dr. Kulsoom Qureshi's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for consulting us.
Usually people are not going to Gynecologist for IUCD insertion or removal. So, even if the pap smear is normal, I think it would be wise to get this wound evaluated properly. The best way is to visit a qualified Gynecologist & have one Colposcopy & directed biopsy (if necessary).
Wish you good health.
Take care.
