Pressure In Ears, Occasionally In Sinus Area. Been Told Related To Eustachian Tube Disorder

Hello. Over the past 8-10 days I have been experiencing quick bolts of pressure in my ears, and occasionally in sinus area between eyes, but mostly in the ears (and only in one ear at a time, never both at the same time). these bolts of pressure are very quick, only lasting about 1 second, that is why i use the term "bolt" because they are so quick. I get these bolts every 10 - 20 seconds usually, but if i keep my mind busy by socializing or watching tv/playing videogames, they dont seem to happen or i dont notice them at least. the feeling of these bolts is usually not severe, it is similar to when you clench your teeth and you feel the pressure in your ears change. never painful.

my primary doctor and and ENT say it is related to my eustachian tube disorder. i am on flonase, zyrtec, saline nasal spray for treatment. have follow up in one month (dec 14) with ENT and Primary.

my question is, is it possible this is caused by anxiety and not ETD? i had severe anxiety over tinnitus attack (tinnitus went away after an hour) before i got this pressure condition, could that anxiety have caused a twitch or spasm in my head that is causing pressure bolts? or something else? my anxiety is still very bad and hard to sleep with bad anxiety and pressure bolts in head. please help if possible, thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

The symptoms as mentioned in your post is indicative of Eustachian tube disorder
Management includes:
1. Antihistamine preparations (like Zyrtec) can be taken for symptomatic relief.
2. Flonase (pharmacologically Fluticasone) is a corticosteroid used as anti-allergic & anti-inflammatory agent.
3. Maintain adequate hydration & take a healthy balance diet.
4. Also make sure that you are well protected from cold, dust & other allergens.

So, the medications prescribed by your Doctor are correct. Kindly take them as advised.
If symptoms still persist, certain investigations like complete blood count, X ray of para nasal sinus & Eustachian tube function tests will be needed.

Wishing you a Good Health.
Take care
