Hi. Lipomas are benign tumor that may grow but the rate of growth is very slow.
A lipoma with the following features should be investigated and if required removed:
1. A rapid increase in size.
2. Pain at tumor site
3. Tumor involves skin or underlying structures.

Investigations should include imaging of back with an ultrasound scan atleast and an MRI scan preferably. A FNAC will differentiate a benign lipoma from a malignant disease. After knowing exact nature of disease, it can be removed surgically.

I hope this answers your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to answer. Thankyou for choosing Healthcare Magic.
