Quit Smoking, Developed A Hacking Cough, Chest Hurts, Dark Spots On Lungs On CT, Polyps. Treatment?

My 24 year old son-in-law recently quit smoking after an 11 year habit. He has developed a hacking cough , and admits to being more run down than he thinks he should be. He says his chest hurts but cannot identify if it is bone pain or muscle pain. He frequently has an upset stomach or a severe headache . He is in the Navy and his ship s doctor found 8 dark spots on his lungs on CT which he called polyps. They have scheduled an endoscopy . His white cell count is 30,000. I am greatly alarmed by these findings. Is it possible that there is a benign reason for them or am I correct that there is cause to be alarmed?

Hi,
Thanks for your query,
Total leucocyte count of 30,000 necessarily denotes infection. Polyp on Ct scan may be an incidental finding of which bronchoscopy guided biopsy will be useful to rule out cancerous lesion though rare at this age.
I think at this juncture he should receive a course of antibiotics to treat infection. Cough and all the respiratory manifestation may be attributed to the infection....

Best wishes
