I have been having trouble with shortness of breath and my cardiologist has done 3 heart tests all of which were good. Today I had a D-Dimer blood test which was very elevated at 1043, went and had a LEV which was negative. I think I should see a pulmonary doctor but he says my lungs sound good. What should I do
Hello Thanks for your query. You have isolated elevation of serum D-Dimer level which is suggestive of pulmonary thromboembolism but obviously not specific for it because D-Dimer may be elevated in many other causes like pneumonia, myocardial infection, 2nd and 3rd trimester of pregnancy etc. Though as you have symptoms I suggest you to go for computed tomography (CT) angiography of chest to exclude underlying embolus and also some cardiac enzyme assays like troponin T to exclude cardiac problems. You should discuss these issues with your cardiologist or you may consult a pulmonologist and get also yourself locally and thoroughly examined. Thank you, Regards, Dr Arnab Maji
