Recommend Medicines For Pain Due To Numbness Of Limbs

I am a 46 year old male getting ready to retire from the fire dept. after 27 years on the job.i suffer from herniated disc in my back and neck. Whenever i lay down or sit for any length of time my limbs go numb and I experience a great deal of pain. It is especially bad when i sleep or try to sleep. When I do eventually fall asleep I wake up with severe body pain and numbness. After Im up for awhile it begins to go away. It has gotten to the point where I am afraid to go to sleep. Doctors have perscribed sleep aids which do help with getting to sleep but the pain in the morning never changes. What is causing this?
