Root Canal Done Twice In Same Tooth. Still Having Issues. Pain Worse After Therapy. Permanent Cure?
I have had two root canals on a particular tooth , and still had issues. My general dentist had me see a endontric specialist. I had two visit for root canal therapy , It s been three days since my last therapy and pain is worse than evern (jaw hurts, throbbing and sharp pain in tooth, earache and headache .). Prior to seeing the endontric, part of the tooth broke off. wondering if the entire tooth is fractured and what would be best to do. I m so done with all this therapy and pain, it s been going on for two months. I did want to try to save my tooth, but I just want it out. Any advice?
As you described, you got root canal treatment twice for the same tooth.
Chance of re-infection is high regarding the rc treated tooth.
The existing pain may be due to-
infected pulp remaining within the pulp canal.
Perforation of the canal.
Grossly involved infection.
If the pain continues, its better to get the teeth removed.
hope this helps
Pain in root canal treated tooth can be because incomplete treatment , re-infection of the tooth abscess formation .
Once the root canal treatment is completed it requires a cap placement as the tooth after the treatment brittle and cannot withstand the masticatory forces , so there are more chances of fracture .
Visit to an endodontist get checkup done .
Take an x-ray .
Depending upon the x-ray the treatment will be either re RCT or extraction of tooth .
hi thnx for your query, the main problem is whether the treatment is properly done or not. 1.whether the root canals are properly cleaned or not . this is because slight remnants of pulp tissue will result in pain.2. over zealous cleaning of root canals result in probing or pushing the infectious material into surrounding tissues and cause pain .3. is there any high point on the restored area of this particular tooth.i advice you to go to a dentist get an x-ray of this particular tooth andcheck out for all possibilities resulting in pain. hope this helps out .
Hello,
I am Dr.Neha Gupta (dentist) and am glad to address to your query here.
possible causes of pain are a persistent infection or a root fracture. If a root canal is completed, but an infection still is present around the periapical area then a retreatment may be indicated especially if significant time has gone by without a resolution of the infection.
Meanwhile ibuprofin to manage the throbbing pain. Rinsing with ice water seems to help.
You may need another regimen of antibiotics or you will need to have this tooth retreated by an endodontist.
Take care and please keep me informed of your progress at healthcaremagic through my profile directly.

hello usually pain subsides after 1st apoointment of root canal when the acess opening and pulp extirpation is done now since you are having a root canal in the same tooth for the 2nd time , this indicates that there must be some periapical infection left that was untreated also you say that part of the tooth broke off, so there might be a chance that you may have got vertical fracture of the tooth which is not visible in radiograph so what i would advise is that get your tooth extracted in the mean while following medication may help reduce the pain 1.levofloxacin 500 mg twice daily for 3 days 2.painkiller like calpol twice daily 3.omnacortil 10 mg twice daily for 3 days 4.luke warm saline rinses 4-6 times daily hope this helps
