Should Anastrozole Be Substituted With Another Medicine To Avoid Its Side Effects?

I have been taking Anastrozole as post breast cancer treatment since March, 2015. It seems the side effects are compounding as time evolves: insomnia, hair thinning, hot flashes, dry mouth (at night). I think my vision has also been compromised, but that could be age-related, too. I see my oncologist today for a 6-month evaluation. Should I request a different avenue of hormone treatment, and if so, what?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

There are several alternatives of Anastrazole such as tamoxifen or exemestane.

There is no proved evidence-based that these medications are more effective than Anastrozole in preventing the recurrence of breast cancer or have fewer side effects.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
