Should I Avoid Traveling Or Flying Within A Month After My Recent Pericarditis Diagnosis?

I was diagnosed with pericarditis 3 months after a coronary artery bypass. The diagnosis was made 1 week ago and I have been taking colchicine and ibuprofen since. I feel a little tired and have mild pain / discomfort when lying but otherwise feel good. FYI - I’m 39 years old. I was planning a 1 week trip (Australia to Mexico) that begins in 1 month but the recent pericarditis has me concerned - should I avoid travel / flying?

Hello,

Health should come first; you are advised to delay travel. Flying long distances from Australia to Mexico can pose several risks. You have already been diagnosed with pericarditis; long-distance travel can cause flare-ups. After CABG, there’s a small but important risk of post-pericardiotomy syndrome. Flying soon after this diagnosis could raise concerns. Continue to take the medicines that have been prescribed.

Consult your cardiologist before the trip. Your cardiologist may recommend you take a repeat echocardiography to check for pericardial effusion. Since you’re young (39), you have better healing capacity. Have patience; focus on treatment and healing. You can travel only if your treating cardiologist gives you clearance.

I hope I have answered your question. Take care.
