Should I Be Concerned About The Elevated GGT Levels?

Dr Charles I have been having LFT over a period of 8 months as my levels were high. I travelled to Thailand last July and got the vomiting quite bad for a couple of days. When I got back my doctor arranged blood tests and my alp and ast were high but are now in the normal range. Although the are now good my alt and ggt are still high. The range for alt should be between 5-30 my reading is 64. The range for ggt should be between 5-35 my reading is 65. Should I be concerned. I occasionally have a glass of wine, maybe 2-3 small glasses a week, sometimes 0 a week. Your advice would be appreciated Paula

Hello
Thanks for writing to HCM

Increased GGT indicates alcoholic liver injury. ALT is also increased due to liver injury. It is important to know other parameters of LFT like bilirubin level.
AST is non specific and it increases in other conditions also.
Ultrasound of abdomen should be done.
Besides medicine you also need life style modification and diet changes.
You can take tablet Ursodeoxycholic acid 300 mg twice daily for three months. It will help in regeneration of liver cells.
You should avoid fatty food and take lot of fruits and vegetables. You should also increase your physical activity in the form of walking and exercise.
You should completely avoid alcohol consumption.

Get well soon.
Take Care
