Should I Start Taking Gabapentin Now?

Hi, I have just been diagnosed with spondylosis c5 level and my doctor has presribed gabapentin. I am not in pain all of the time but had a terrible bout of pain before Christmas, did not know what it was but thought I had pulled a muscle. She prescribed a week's diazapam to get me over the pain until the xray, which did the trick, still get one or two niggles but not as bad. Should I start taking gabapentin now or wait until if and when the systems worsen?
