Should I Stop Synthroid After Being Diagnosed With Blighted Ovum?

My husband is taking lithium, abilify, smokes weed, and drinks more than 2 alcohol beverages a day. I was just told I had a blighted ovum today at my ultra sound. Before getting pregnant I stopped taking all medications except synthroid, I changed all of my daily products to organic, I eat organic, and took a prenatal vitamins. My question is, could this be because of the type of drugs he takes and alcohol? By no means do I blame him for anything. I would just like to increase our chances of this never happening again. Should we talk to his doctor about switching his meds to a different catagory? Thank you in advance.

Hello, and I hope i can help you today.

A blighted ovum is a pregnancy that never developed a fetus or where the fetus died at a very early gestation. The reason for the pregnancy not developing further is because in greater than 99 percent of cases, the pregnancy was genetically abnormal. One in ten pregnancies miscarry by chance alone, and that risk increased to one in 7 if you are over 35, and 1 in 5 if you're over 40.

There is little medical research on the effect of the male partner on the health of a pregnancy. The only studies that have been conclusive is that men over 50 have an increased percentage of abnormal sperm, and their partners may have an increased chance of an abnormal pregnancy. There is little medical research on the effect of any drugs on sperm quality. But most sperm issues affect the man's sperm count, not the quality of the sperm.

So there is no medical evidence that any medication your husband takes, or even the drinking and marijuana, affects the genetics of his offspring. You did all the right things to prepare for a healthy pregnancy, including continuing to take your Synthroid (it is important for the fetus to have enough thyroid hormone especially in early pregnancy). Once you have treatment for your blighted ovum, you can start trying to conceive again once you have a normal menstrual period.

I hope i was able to adequately answer your question today and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
