Should I Take Propranolol For Night Sweats After Discontinuing Loxet And Remeron?

hello, I have been taking an SNRI (loxyt) and Tetracyclic ( remeron) antidepressants for probably 4 months.. then I got these excessive night sweats on a regular basis including nightmares and intense dreams.my psychiatrist told me to decrease the doses and stop these medications cause i wanted to recover in a different way. but unfortunalty, i still struggle big time from nightsweats, brain zaps, increase anxiety and diffculty falling asleep especially afte stopping Remeron ( i think it helped me sleep faster when i was taking it) my questions are: should i take propranolol for the elimination of night sweats? and do I still need to take concor in the morning because I usually do? last question: any idea when do I get rid of these annoying brain zaps? or how?! thank you and hope can anyone help me here as I really need it.

Hello,

Brain zaps are indicative of classic withdrawal effect, especially from SNRIs like Loxet. Commonly they fade within a few weeks to a couple of months, but duration varies depending on the dose, and how long it's been taken. Night sweats are common after you stop taking anti-depressants. Taking propranolol, may not be helpful.

In most cases, night sweating improves on its own, without medication, over some weeks or a few months Do not ever stop taking antidepressants abruptly. Slow tapering the medication will prevent severe withdrawal symptoms. Take omega-3 supplements (fish oil) it will help to stabilize the nerve cell membranes, which may reduce these brain zaps.

Good sleep hygiene and hydration is helpful. Omega-3 lowers heart rate slightly and helps the nervous system to relax. The relaxing effect isn’t like a sedative (not immediate), but more like a gradual calming and stabilizing of the nervous system. You can feel the difference in 1–2 weeks (lighter brain zaps, calmer mood). For mood and sleep, it may take 4–6 weeks of daily use.

Avoiding alcohol and too much caffeine. You can include natural form of omega 3 fatty acids in your diet like fatty fish (for direct EPA and DHA). If you are a vegetarian include walnuts, in your diet. Since both Concor and propranolol are beta-blockers, taking both could cause dangerously low heart rate or blood pressure. You can continue taking Concor unless your cardiologist/psychiatrist says otherwise.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
