Should I Take Blood Pressure Medicine If I Have Normal BP?

I went to see my Dr and when they did the blood pressure test it was 212 over 180. It had never been like that before. He put me on blood pressure med at once. Now my pressure is almost every day 107/78. Do you think maybe I do not need these? The ones that I am taking I have to cut in half otherwise they cause a nasty cough. This is the second kind I have taken?

Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.

Normotension begets normotension. You had very high BP (212/180 mm hg) at the beginning. Your BP is now 107/78 mm hg on drugs;that is well-controlled BP. You can now ease on the dosage of your anti-hypertensive drugs. So long BP remains under 140/90 mm hg,one need not worry. The drug which gives you nasty cough is either one of those ACEI (angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitor) or ARB (angiotensin II receptor blocker), common drug to initiate treatment for high BP. You have to continue your drug for BP, in view of one episode of accelerated hypertension. If you continue to remain under control i.e .BP less than 140/90 mm hg,eventually your drugs may be withdrawn gradually under supervision of physician.
