Should Statin Drugs Be Started For High Cholesterol Levels?

I am a 60 year old female, 5' 2", 106# with both parents who had heart disease. I recently had a lipid panel done. My results were triglycerides 48, HDL 143, LDL 120 and total cholesterol of 273. My physician feels I should be prescribed one of the statin drugs. My previous 2 physicians told me with an HDL as high as it is I should never have to worry about taking anything to lower my cholesterol unless the readings change drastically. My current physician is also considering meds for high blood pressure. Mine is usually about 135 - 140/75 - 83. She wants them no higher than 130/80. What is your opinion on these two matters?

Hello!

Welcome in HCM!

I read your question carefully and understand your concern.

I would like to explain that the total cholesterol/HDL ratio is more indicative of cardiovascular disease than TC (total cholesterol). In your case it is 273/143=1.91.

For women a ratio
So there is nothing to worry about your lipid profile, and you don't need any medication.

Regarding your blood pressure, it seems to be in the borderline of a normal blood pressure and high blood pressure.

I would recommend to make some modifications to your lifestyle, before considering to start medical treatment:
- modify your diet: avoid caffeine and reduce as much as possible salt intake
- make a lot of physical activity, yoga
-avoid stressful situation and practice meditation.

I recommend to closely monitor your blood pressure. If your blood pressure gets higher, an antihypertensive therapy may be necessary.

Hope to have been of help!

Best regards,
Dr. Iliri
