Should Warfarin Intake Be Continued Even After A Blood Clot Has Healed?

6 months ago I had a blood clot in my leg and went on Warfarin. My Internal Medicine doctor says I should come off Warfarin because this was a one time occurrence but my Vascular Surgeon says I can stay on Warfarin as insurance against another clot. What do you say?

Hi,

If any congenital cause of thrombosis present then only lifetime Warfarin prescribed otherwise not.

So you can rule out causes that are having a high risk of thromboses like factor V Leiden mutation, prothrombin gene mutation, protein C and S deficiency etc.

You can be investigated with full coagulation profile panel. If all these causes negative then no need to continue Warfarin.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
