Should A Stubbed Toe With Nail Growing Both Backward And Forward Be Removed?
My daughter has a toe that was stubbed when she was little. It has been seen by a foot doctor where it was filed and dug at. She had three nails at one point. It is down to only one but it is growing backward and forward. We have been soaking it in Epson salt which helps a little. However, she is 15 now and with athletics it constantly is bumped and not in the best of shape. It is painful and I feel that it needs to be removed. I want to know what Dr. in the Sioux Falls area that would be a good Dr. for this. Thanks, Shelby
Hi. Yet the best treatment to try would be to soak in the Epson salt. And then to file the only the top curve in the center throughout it's length. This helps to elevate the dug-in part. This has to be done daily and helps in many cases to avoid surgery. another way is to remove the nail/s. Yet the results will be there only when the ''roots'' of the nail is excised for a few mm on both sides to allow the new nail to grow a bit shorter in side-to-side dimension. This give a permanent relief.
