Should An Arachnoid Cyst Of 10cm By 7.5cm Be Surgically Removed?
My 3 year old son was just diagnosed with a 10cm by 7.5 cm arachnoid cyst over his left temporal. He currently has no symptoms except he does have a large size lump on the side of his head. We are seeing a nuerosurgeon tomorrow. Do you think because of the size they would want to remove it?
I can understand your concern. Arachnoid cysts occur due to congenital collection of fluid in the arachnoid membrane of the brain or spinal cord.
As the cyst is not compressing any nerve or blood vessels, there are no symptoms felt now. In addition, the growth of this cyst is very slow.
However, removal of this cyst is advised in most cases due to chances of future complications. There are different approaches for the treatment of the cyst. One includes aspiration of fluid from the cyst. It is a minimal invasive technique but has high chances of regrowth of the cyst.
Other is marsupialuzation or complete excision of the cyst along with its cystic lining to prevent recurrence.
As you are visiting the neurologist tomorrow, he/she can examine the cyst clinically and can advise you accordingly regarding the approach of treatment.
I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. Take care.
Best, Dr. Viraj Shah
