Should Antibiotics Be Started A Week Prior To Dental Work Post Heart Valve Replacement?

I had a recent heart valve replacement (cow s valve) and was told that I should take an antibiotic for 7 days prior to any dental work. Just received an Rx for clindamycin with instuctions to take 2 300 mg tabs at least 30 minutes prior to dental procedure. This is obviously different from 7 days. Is this ok?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have heart valve replacement done and after that you want to get dental work done which is not problematic if your functioning going well post heart valve replacement. Yes you should take antibiotic course one week before so as to prevent any exiting infection. Infection will be suppressed and subsided post antibiotic course. You should avoid any surgical extraction and massive instrumentation for few months. Visit oral physician get proper examination done and after that start treatment properly.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
