Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Should Blood Sugar Medications Be Taken Despite The Levels Being Very Low?
I m a 67 year old female type II diabetic. Usually my blood sugar numbers run between 105-120, but for the last 5 hours I ve been getting readings of 51, 62, and 67, I ve eaten carbs and protein and that usually brings me out of the shakes. Not today. My doctor it was OK to take my Metformin (2 tabs of 500mg) at supper and keep checking the blood sugars. That seems like it would take my numbers even lower. Do you think it s OK to take medicine?
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. If your blood glucose levels are maintained between 105 to 120 mg/dl with medications as has been advised to be taken, then there is no problem and you can continue with the same. However, if your blood glucose level readings are consistently lower with less than 60 mg/dl and becomes associated with symptoms of hypoglycemia such as tiredness, fatigue, sweating and giddiness, then you need a review of the dose and medications what you have been taking. Kindly consult Diabetologist or Physician under such circumstances promptly. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
