Should Blood Thinners Be Avoided Before Taking A Cortisone Shot?

I am having a cortisone shot in my lower back tomorrow. The pre surgical nurse asked if I was taking any blood thinners. I am taking meloxicam is that one? She didn t say whether I should skip it tomorrow she just asked if I was taking one. Their office is now closed. Should I skip it tonight and tomorrow?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I understand your concern.

When steroid injection is recommended on lower back, you are advised to stop all anti clotting meds (like aspirin, Coumadin, etc).
This is to prevent unnecessary complications.

Meloxicam belongs to NSAIDs drug group and it's not an anti clotting medication, it's an anti-inflammatory med.

It can be used prior and after lumbar cortisone injection.
If it was a cervical or thoracal injection, then, the nurse could have asked to stop taking it prior to cortisone injection.

As yours is a lumbar injection, should not stop taking it.

All the best.
