Should I Be Worried About The Sore Neck And Low Fever?

My grandson just complained of a sore neck ( on the left side only) so I took his temp. and is it only 100. He is 6 years old and we just returned from a family vacation of swimming (jumping off the boat dock) and boating. Should I be concerned? Do you think he picked up something from the lake?

Hello dear,

The symptoms as mentioned in your post can be attributed to either viral fever or Upper Respiratory tract infection.

Management includes:
1. Warm salt water gargle.
2. Analgesic anti-pyretic preparation like Paracetamol for control of fever.
3. Antihistamine preparations for symptomatic control of sore throat.
4. Antibiotics depending upon culture & sensitivity reports.
5. Maintain adequate hydration & a healthy balance diet.
6. Also make sure that he is well protected from cold, dust & other allergens.

If symptoms persist for more than 02 days, kindly consult his Pediatrician for proper clinical examination.
Investigations like complete blood count, peripheral smear for malaria, Dengue check will be helpful in clinching the diagnosis.

Wish your grandson good health & a speedy recovery.
Take care.
