Should Mitoprosol Tablets Be Swollen For Abortion?

I am 8 weeks pregnant and yesterday at my appointment there was no fetal heartbeat. My doctor told me I could swallow 4 mitoprosol tablets, which I did 4.5 hours ago, and nothing has happened but mild cramping. All the forums I read say NOT to swallow them but my doctor told me I could. Will it still work?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

At 8 weeks of pregnancy, it would be ideal to go for a combination of mifepristone with misoprostol since the efficacy of medical abortion is reduced after 7 weeks of gestation. Also, vaginal or buccal routes of administration of misoprostol are more effective than oral route. If nothing happens even after 6 to 8 hours, you should report to your doctor and ask for the need of a second dose.
Please do not self-medicate.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Oral misoprostol does not work, when you put it in the vagina for a nonviable pregnancy and has more side effects. It may still work, but it also depends on the dose of the medication. In the US, the dose recommended is 800 micrograms (mcg) vaginally that may be repeated in 4 hours if nothing happens.

I suggest you discuss this dosing regimen with your doctor and consider repeating the treatment if the medication doesn't work after 24 hours.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
