Should My Son Use Inhaler For Cough?

Hi my son use to have asthma but has not used his puffer in two years I believe he has outgrown it...he is at his dads and text me to tell me he is not allowed to go play hockey because of his phlegm cough. His dad gave his his puffer and some cough medicine. I asked my son if he was having any problems breathing he said no just a cough. So finally my question is should he take his puffer...I believe he should not take it what do you think?

Hi, I'am Dr Suresh K Yadav MD (paediatrics), I had gone through your question and understand your concerns,

Most likely his cough seems to be related to asthma , in that case inhalation prophylactic therapy is recommended if symptoms ( cough ) are occurring daily.
Inhalation therapy is relatively safe on long term use . He also need annual influenza shots. Asthma may manifest cough as only symptom.

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions

Take care.
