Should One Avoid Lifting Heavy Objects Post Spigelian Hernia(lower Quadriceps) Surgery?

Good evening! I am recovering from surgery -almost 2 weeks ago = for a Spigalian hernia - left lower quad. - afraid of harming the area if I do too much too soon = suggested that I not lift anything over 10 lbs for 6 weeks so off work til then - can I injure the operative site if I lift something over 10 lbs without thinking? and how will I know if I have done damage to area?
