Snoring At Night In Obese People.

Hi, I married 28 year old. Recently i started snoaring at nights. This all started after i got married. Not sure if there is a link for that. But its causing a lot of disturbance to my wife and she is not able to sleep. I am not able to get rid of that. I heard that its dangerous to snoar which might lead to heart problems. I noticed that i snoar only when i sleep on my back or sides. But not much when i sleep my stomach facing down. Can you please let me know how to get rid of this. I work in night shifts. I have a growing tummy. Please suggest me how to get rid of snoaring. Regards, Naren.

You most probably have been having this problem before your marriage, but it has been noticed now as your wife has told you about it!! Snoring in adult men is caused by different conditions like for example: 1) Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) 2) Alcoholism, 3) Obesity, 4) enlarged adenoids or tonsils, 5) Nasal conditions,- causing blockage of the nose like a nasal polyp or a deviated nasal septum 6) Abnormal airways and many more. It is good that you have done some research about your problem and yes snoring can cause a lot of problems for your health. For proper investigation to determine the cause of your snoring and its treatment you will need to go for a physical examination to an ENT surgeon and sleep specialist if required after that (the ENT surgeon will advice you on this).

Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
Snoring is usually seen while lying supine as in this position the back of the tongue partially obstructs the airways producing the sound. It does not happen at the voluntary level so you cannot stop it voluntarily. Getting yourself examined from an ENT specialist will help in ruling out the common organic causes of airway obstruction.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.
