Stabbing Pain In Ribs And Intercostal Muscles, Difficulty In Coughing And Sneezing, Suffered From Flu

I have had a strange stabbing pain in the ribs and intercostal muscles under my left breast for about 4 days now - the pain is definitely not coming from the breast tissue itself and there are no lumps or changes that I can find. The pain is worse at night when I have not been wearing a bra for a while, but the band does rest on the area of the pain. It also hurts to cough/ sneeze , and I did get over a bad episode of the flu about a week before the pain began. Any ideas what might be wrong?

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hai,

Thanks for writing in.

It seems to be a simple muscular cramp / fatigue probably after prolonged dry cough from flu. Muscle cramps can hurt you while coughing/ sneezing.

It can be costo-chondritis also, but needs a physical examination by your doctor.

If you are not having any phlegm while coughing (means dry cough) then you can take some cough suppressants along with few muscle relaxants /NSAID's to relieve your pain.

Usually it is a self limiting problem & will subside within a week. If the problem persists have a chest Xray done after consulting your doctor.

Get well soon,
Regards,

Hello dear, There could be a costocondritis or severe muscle pull. you need to be examined by any orthopaedician or a physiotherapist. Sometimes problem at back/spine also refers pain to front side. Now at least you can try pulsed ultrasound therapy at a physiotherapy clinic near by you. Wish you a good health soon.
