Strep Throat Followed By Hearing Loss In Right Ear, Tightness In Chest. What Is Wrong ?

Hi, I just got over strep throat about a week ago, and then I experienced a hearing loss in my right ear, which my mom (a doctor) thinks was from inflammation, so I went on a decongestant, a muscle relaxer, and an anti-inflammatory. The hearing is slowly coming back, and I thought I was getting better, but now I have a tightness in my chest and taste blood when I cough, but don't see any. Do you know what might be wrong?

Hello

Thanks for writing to H.C.M.

I read your query regarding strep throat infection followed by hearing loss and tightness in chest. Though after taking treatment hearing is improving.

According to your symptoms it appears as you are having strep throat infection which is blocking your eustachian tube at the pharyngeal end thus giving rise to negative pressure in middle ear which is causing impairement of hearing.

Your tightness in chest may be due to associated infection of lungs ( Pneumonitis ) or there may be cardiac complications of strep infections. To manage it you should do-

(1) X-Ray chest ( P.A. view ).

(2) Eco-cardiogram.

(3) Blood - CBC, ASO titre.

(4) Urine - R & M examination.

After this much thorough examination and clinical co relation of relevent investigations will help in making proper diagnosis, which may be accordingly manage.

Regards.
