Pulmonary causes could be chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, pleuritis or a pneumonia. Smoking predisposes you to develop respiratory infections, emphysema and lung cancer. Cardiac causes like pericarditis and angina pectoris could mimic these presentations. A chest X ray could be necessary to make this distinction and orient on prescription of other investigations like sputum exams and bronchoscopies, endoscopic exams of the lung trees if necessary.
