Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Suffer From Bipolar Disorder. Have Smoking And Alcohol Addiction. Not Ready To Take Medication. What To Do?
I am 68 yrs old. My son Somasundaram, now 38 yrs, was treated for Bipolar 3 years ago, but once in away he is getting into that typical pattern. He smokes and drinks. Since his first treatment of Bipolar, he is not steady in his mind and have not worked. Presently he is in the same condition as before and not taking any medication and not willing to go to the Doctor. He was treated at Markham Stoufville Hospital by DR. Berber, and we as parents would like to go to the hospital again for advice. Is there any other solution for this as we are also getting old now? Siva & Yvonne Somasundaram
You should consult the nearest reputed psychiatrist for help.
Please encourage him to join with you for a doctor consultation.
You should also encourage him for deaddiction.

Hi
Thanks for writing to Health Care Magic
Bipolar disorder is a chronic recurring psychiatric condition. It requires treatment for a prolonged period i.e. atleast 2 to 5 years and sometimes life time. It is an episodic illness and there is atleast partial remission in between episodes. Once the illness sets in patient's behavior changes (as you have observed he started smoking and drinking with the start of the new episode) Good compliance with medication and regular followoup with a psychiatrist makes a difference.
Hope this helps you
Best wishes and regards
