Hi,

Metformin commonly causes gastrointestinal side effects like abdominal pain / cramps, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Metformin should actually be taken before food.In case of gastric intolerance, it can be taken after food which may reduce symptoms. Alternatively you can reduce the dose or use 500mg SR tablet twice a day which can help in controlling symptoms. Reducing the dose and taking the drug after food can reduce your discomfort to a large extent.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
