Suffering From Cough, Blood In Mucus. Gets Worse At Night. What Could Be The Problem?

Hi Dr. I have been coughing for a while (since last Thansgiving). Sometimes I would not cough for a couple of days which made me think that I was all fine but it came back again. The cough is usually worse at night but it could happen during the day as well. I cough up clear mucus and sometimes with a trace of blood . I never smoke in my life. What could be the problem? Thanks.

Hello Dora and welcome to HCM
I am General and Family Physician and read your query in detail. You have to be investigated in detail for the diseases related to respiratory system. The detail provided by you is not sufficient. As you have cough with mucus for several days and don't know about Fever, Weight loss, Appetite, and clinical examination of the chest whether crept or whistling sound present or not? We can not get to a diagnosis till the complete history is there.
But according to the detail provided by you you must go for Chest X-ray, Complete Heamogram, Sputum for AFB, Mantoux test and if needed and advised by your doctor CT chest.
You might be suffering for Pulmonary Tuberculosis (as you have cough and mucous contain blood), Allergic Bronchitis (as your symptoms subsided for a time of period), Bronchial Pneumonia, COPD(don't know whether you have breathlessness or not) or Upper respiratory track infection. Consult your Family Physician and get your investigation done and than follow his advises.
It also needs to be investigated that blood in the sputum is from respiratory tract or from Upper GI track.
Till you consult your Physician do Steam Inhalation 4-6 times a day and try to expel out the cough as much as you can, Don't take cold drinks, cold water, Ice cream and banana, avoid oily food, Don't take food containing Caffeine.
Please give your clear and detail history so in Health Care Magic and you will get a clear and specific answer to your query.
Best Wishes
