Suffering From Gall Stones In Gallbladder. Doing Homeopathic Treatment. Options Other Than Surgery?

Hi Doctor,

I have been diagnosed with 2-4mm calculi in the lumen i.e. gallstones in the gallbladder. I have been under homeopathic medication for the last one year with strict diet control. There has been no pain since the time I have been having the medicines. Would like to know whether surgery is the only cure to gallstones as my homeopathic doctor says that it is curable and no surgery is required.

Hello, srividyadey,
Apparently you have not had any severe acute attack or inflammation
of your gallbladder which would have sent you to the hospital.
Your sonogram shows 2-4 mm. size stones. These can be dissolved by
medications such as chenodeoxy cholic acid. If the stones are mainly
made out of cholesterol crystals , this drug is very effective. If there
is significant calcium in the composition of the stones this won't work.
The drug has some side effects such as diarrhea, nausea and indigestion.
This will improve with time. You need to be on the medication 6-12 months
with follow up sonograms to see the size of the stones. In most cases it is
possible that the stones would come back after the drug is stopped.
In other words , your gallbladder still is abnormal with abnormal bile
formation that causes stones. The definitive way of cure is by removing the
gallbladder by surgery. This can be done through laparoscopic method and
can be done as same day surgery. Recovery is faster.
You can discuss these with your doctor and take proper action.
I wish you well.

General Surgeon Dr. Sohail Quazi 's  Response
Hello and Thanks for posting your Query on HCM
Small stones in the gall bladder are common, If a gallstone moves into the duct that carries bile, and stretches it or gets stuck, distressing symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, even jaundice and pancreatitis can occur
Adult patients with silent or incidental gallstones should be observed and managed conservatively, Oral bile acid dissolution: ursodeoxycholic acid.is given to patients who do not wish to undergo surgery. If surgery has to be postponed patient is advised to avoid dietary fats and large meals.
Patients with symptomatic gall stone disease should undergo elective surgery for cholecystectomy to avoid complications of Gall stone disease.
Cholecystectomy open or laproscopic for patients with symptomatic gallstones offers excellent long term results.
About 90% of patients with typical biliary symptoms and stones are rendered symptom free after cholecystectomy.
No Long term studies are available which proves that homeopathy is curable for Gall Stones, though it has been shown to be helpful to some people in relieving pain.
My suggetion to continue with conservative management and keep a watch and if you get pain or recurrent symptoms should consult a surgeon and should go for surgery to avoid any complications.
Hope I have answered your Queries.
Wishing you good health

General Surgeon Dr. Grzegorz Stanko's  Response
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Natural medicine (especially homeopathy) has very arguable effect for gallstones treatment.
If you decide to try, you need to be aware (what for sure your homeopathic doctor did not mentioned) that small stones always give risk of pancreas ducts obstruction what can lead to acute pancreatitis. Acute pancreatitis is very dangerous and life threatening disease which can affect your further life.

That is why I suggest you to visit gastroenterologist or general surgeon and discuss it.

Hope this will help.
Regards.

1. stones in GB if occur due to hypothyroidism can be treated medically but looking into the anatomy of gall bladder, where it is kinked at the junction of cystic duct, thus it is impossible to treat or dissolve them medically.
2. If they remain in the lumen, there is every possibility of resulting Gangrene, so Surgery (cholecystectomy) should be performed at earliest.
