Suffering With Fever, Vertigo, Low Appetite, No Nausea. What Could The Cause Be?
Hello, im worried about my cousin that came to visit to guadalajara , mexico becuz im studying med school down here. When i saw her she already had a fever , vertigo and hardly ate. No diarrhea , no vomiting and no nausea . When shereturned to orlando florida she was hospitalized and is now isolated becuz they dont know what she has. Im thinking some type of virus but not sure. Any light that u may shed for me? Thanks.

1. Fever with vertigo without nausea/vomiting may result from infection in the innermost part of the ear(s), which- along with cerebellum- the posterior part of the brain) is responsible for maintaining balance. But, at the same time, the term vertigo is usually used for episodic giddiness/dizziness. As your friend's oral intake was very poor, starvation/dehydration can be the cause of giddiness.
2. I also agree with you that there are several viruses which can affect the brain. The treating doctor should tap a little amount of fluid from the spinal cord and send the same for analysis. CT/MRI scan of brain should also be done to exclude/confirm presence of any brain lesion. Once the culprit organism/virus is isolated, appropriate treatment can be started by the treating doctor.
Please revert back to me in case of further clarifications, if any
Have a nice day.
