Oh, my dear! How about melatonin? You don't want to use it every night forever as it may decrease your own melatonin production. However, you could try it every day for a week and if it seems to help, drop down to using the melatonin spray just for the nights you cannot sleep. I advise the spray as it goes directly into the circulation as opposed to a pill that has to travel through the digestive tract.
Melatonin is a natural hormone made in your brain and is used for shift workers, for people with sleep troubles, for seasonal affective disorder, and controlling cluster
headaches. Potential side effects:
Sleepiness.
Lower body temperature.
Vivid dreams.
Morning grogginess.
Small changes in blood pressure.
It is much safer than pharmaceutical drugs.
Herbal wise, you may try lemon balm tea, not lemon but lemon balm. It has sedative properties and is an option. As with many things, potential side effects include:When taken by mouth, lemon balm can cause some side effects including
nausea,
vomiting,
abdominal pain,
dizziness, and
wheezing. As always, if side effects occur, discontinue use.
Both solutions above have safer profiles than pharmaceutical drugs and as with all chemicals we put in our body, some agree with us and some don't.
I hope one of these two suggestions work safely for you. Most kindly, Kathy Shattler, MS,RDN
