Suggest A Safe Treatment For Terrible GI Issues During Pregnancy

I am going on 19 weeks pregnant with terrible GI issues. I have been vomiting for over 3 weeks and can t keep anything down. I have been in the hospital for almost a week now. They placed a Dobhoff tube in Thursday that I ended up vomiting out yesterday, they want to place another one but I don t think I can handle that, I want them to consider a PEG tube. It that safe in high risk pregnant patients? I have a Gastro problem that causes me to have a lump in my throat where the food doesn t digest and sits in my stomach. Is there a safe route they can take in pregnancy to resolve this issue so that I can eat?

Hello,

It's essential to manage distressing gastrointestinal issues while considering the safety of interventions for both you and your baby. When dealing with severe vomiting and an inability to keep food down during pregnancy, a PEG (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy) tube might be considered in certain cases, especially if other methods like a Dobhoff tube have not been successful.

However, the decision to proceed with any intervention, especially a PEG tube placement, during pregnancy should involve a thorough discussion between you, your obstetrician, and a gastroenterologist to weigh the risks and benefits. The risks and safety considerations of a PEG tube placement during pregnancy might include:

The placement of a PEG tube involves a procedure that typically requires sedation or anesthesia. This carries some inherent risks, especially during pregnancy. Anesthesia in pregnant individuals requires careful consideration and monitoring to minimize risks to the fetus. Invasive procedures during pregnancy carry some risks. It could be infection, bleeding, or other procedure related complications impacting pregnancy.

A PEG tube might provide better nutritional support by ensuring that you receive necessary nutrients, but it's essential to assess if alternative methods of nutrition or managing your GI issues can be explored first. Non-invasive precautions like changes in diet, adjusted medication, or other interventions can be explored to alleviate symptoms. Discuss all available options thoroughly to understand potential risks and benefits with your gastroenterologist and obstetrician.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
