Suggest A Substitute For NSAIDs For A 58-year-old

I am a 58 yo w male who had a ruptured disc at c3,4 in 1983. Subsequent myelogram revealed congenital stenosis of canal from c3-7 to the point CSF would not flow. Laminectomy c3 thru 6 & discectomy w/o fusion at 3-4 performed. Over the years discs blew from 4-7 & anterior fusions were performed. Now anterior vertebral bodies are causing 5 or more myelopathies (doc stopped counting at 5) are present. B/c of laminectomies anterior decompressions are not feasible. Pain management seems to be only option. I cannot take NSAIDs because they damaged liver over the years. What do you recommend. of course i m very depressed, as driving priviledges have been taken as they should have been. i m taking 100mcg fentanyl transdermal, dillauded started for break through butnow every 8. It s getting hard erder each day for reasons to get out of bed some days to get up b/c of the pain, I just don,t know where the of it is going to be. Any recommendations? Oh I didn t mention no full night of sleep in years. Cannot afford this. Thanks any way.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Analgesics such as Acetaminophen are effective for mild to moderate pain. Opioid pain relievers (narcotics) are powerful prescription drugs used to treat moderate to severe pain.

Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are more commonly prescribed like Aspirin and Ibuprofen because of the large margin of safety and better tolerance.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
