Hello,
Welcome to healthcare magic.
I have read your question completely and understand your concerns.

Hypothyroidism ( under active thyroid) can cause weight gain but it is unlikely to cause gap in the knee. Your mother's knee problem could be due to a different problem altogether, obviously the pain is worsened due to weight gain.

Can I advise you to see a orthopedic doctor for the knee problem and can you get a serum TSH level done so that you can be sure that she is getting the right dose of Levothyroxine tablet.

I hope this answer has helped you.

Thank you

Regards
