Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been taking amoxicillin for 2 weeks for an infection in my tooth, this has not gotten rid of it so I can have it extracted. Now the dentist has put me on clindamycin 150mg every 6 hours. I am worried about the side effect c.diff. Can't the dentist prescribe another antibiotic without this side effect?
I have gone through your query and can understand your concern...
As per your complain and presentation of symptoms Clindamycin is commonly given as post extraction antibiotic for preventing infections and Clostridium Difficile is not always apparent in all individuals who take Clindamycin..
But in case if you are fearful about it you can take Amoxicillin in place of Clindamycin as it will also act well and as you have already taken it before without any side effects it will not cause you any discomfort now also..
Amoxicillin is the most commonly prescribed and drug of choice for tooth infections.. But antibiotics will give it temporary relief, therefore you should consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and get an x ray of the tooth done.. Root canal treatment can be done if tooth is in a condition to be saved while extraction can be done in case of gross decay..
Hope this information helps..
Regards.
