Suggest Alternative Medication For Prednisone Taken For Constant Productive Cough

My husband has a constant caugh and spits up mucus for two years now. He has seen two different lung specialists (pulmonary) and was finally given a miracle drug that worked in one day! Prednisone 10 MG. He has tried inhalers but nothing works but the Prednisone. He has taken all of his prescription with lower amounts down to 1/2 pill a day starting with 4 pills a day. He saw his primary Doctor yesterday (internal Medicine) and she stated that He can not stay on the Prednisone as it would not be good for him. She increased the dosage on an inhaler Dulera 200mcg. Is there any other medication that you can recommend for him? We are desperate for help. We know that he has infazima but not really bad per his CT scan. Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I agree with his doctor, the continued use of the prednisone would cause significant long term problems.

The most common reasons for chronic cough are
(1) postnasal drip which is undetected in 20% of persons

It is treated with the use of nasal sprays such as nasonex, avamys, flonase etc. Decongestants are also helpful as well. Postnasal drip is the most common reason for chronic cough.

(2) asthma

(3) GERD (gastrointestinal reflux)

Some persons may have a combination of problems.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
