Suggest Alternative Medicine Of Donepezil For Dementia

About 18 months ago my 87 years old mum was diagnosed with early onset dementia. The GP prescribed 10mg donepezil, then reduced them to 5mg. about 5months ago myself and my sister thought she needed to go back onto 10mg,as she was getting very confused, so I contacted her doctor who said this was okay and prescribed 10mg. Just lately we have noticed that she has had a lot of diarrhoea and cannot hold herself. Could it be that the 10mg are too strong for her. Should she go back to 5mg or is there an alternative medicine that doesn t have the same side effect.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Welcome to HCM
This is Dr. Swarnava dattagupta answering your query

See, donepezil is one of the best drugs right now for dementia and Alzheimers. Normally, 5mg should be enough. In some cases only, 10mg is needed.
I will suggest you to continue 5mg and if the side effects are too many, try Memantine which is again a very good drug with rare complications. Consult your doctor about its prescription.

Hope this was helpful.
Regards
