Suggest An Alternative Medication For Lamictal, An Anticonvulsant

I am currently on 175mg of lamotrigine BID (for 5 years) and have recently (1 year) developed anticonvulsant hypersensitivity syndrome, with an unresolving skin rash. My seizures have been well controlled on Lamictal so I am hesitant to switch anticonvulsants. What is likely to be the safest, most effective alternative? If I have AHS with Lamictal am I likely to develop same (or S-J) on another anticonvulsant as well?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear , This is Dr. S. Tomar from healthcaremagic.com's medical team and I ll be your medical adviser for this question. First of all thank you for sharing your concern with us and showing trust on us.
AHS and SJ are possible side effects of lamotrigine ( lamictal) which are seen mostly with in 2 to 8 week of therapy . There are other medicines which should be tried like valproic acid , topiramate or vigabatrin after discussing with your healthcare providers . Mentioned manifestations are seen in 5 percent of people with lamictal but if you are experiencing then should inform your healthcare providers straight away and should ask for alternative medicine .
This is my initial response and discussion is open until you have any query or need further clarification.
I wish you good health .
Thank you for your question and feel free to contact further for any question .
sincerely,
Dr. Shardendu Tomar
